London 2012 Olympics & International Muslim Women's roles

Saudi Arabia's contingent takes part in the athletes parade during the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium July 27, 2012. Saudi Arabia's first female Olympic athletes made their appearance at the opening ceremony to the London Games on Friday, dressed in traditional hijabs, or Islamic headscarfs.

یک زن توانا و شجاع از افغانستان امسال در المپیک شرکت می کند. تهمینه کوهستانی بیست و سه ساله است و در مسابقاتِ دوش در مملکت متفاوت دنیا شرکت کرده است. ما به این زنِ شجاع افتخار می کنیم و برایش آرزوی موفقیت داریم.

We have an amazing woman from Afghanistan running women's 100m in the Olympics 2012. Tahmina Kohestani is 23 years old and has participated in several international competitions so far. Send Tahmina some positive energy! We are proud of her and we wish her success!

Sarah Attar made history this morning when she ran in the 800 meter race for Saudi Arabia. Congrats Sarah! While Saudi women can now go for the gold, why can't they drive?! Tell Saudi officials: Let women drive!


9/Woroud Swalha is a Palestinian



 Woroud Swalha is a Palestinian competing in the 800m women’s race in London 2012 Olympics. Woroud is one of 6 Palestinian atheletes to compete in the games.

LONDON - 2012 OLYMPICS
Woroud Sawalha knows she won't win a medal at the London Olympics. She isn't likely to get beyond the first round of the 800 meters. But for the 20-year-old and her three teammates, just competing under the Palestinian flag is a source of pride. "My dream is to do something for Palestine and show the world that Palestine deserves to live and stand on the podium." (Africa to Gaza Aid Convoy)

These 5 sportsmen and women will be representing Palestine in the London Olympic 2012.

Shamiul Joarder, Head of Public Affairs Friends of Al-Aqsa had the opportunity to spend several hours with the team. He said 'It was a great pleasure to spend time with the team. The whole team, the coaches and the athletes were so happy and proud to be in London representing Palestine and they were humbled by the level of public affection they received today. I hope everyone will put on their Palestine t-shirts, get out their flags and support Palestine this Summer. '
